  • The LHC has begun working!

the LHC's particle detectors have been recording hits from cosmic rays for several months and at 5pm on Friday 22 August 2008 LHCb*, one of the four LHC experiments, reconstructed in its Vertex Locator (VELO) the first particles from the LHC. It is the first time particle tracks have been reconstructed from a man-made event generated by the collider.

  • Held for 5 hours for taking a photo of police reversing down a 1-way street

A man who challenged police reversing the wrong way up a one-way street - to visit a chippie - was thrown in a cell for 5 hours and then spent a week on bail. Also, he had his DNA and fingerprints taken.

And the stupid police wonder why they get no respect?

  • Sourceforge Stats

No doubt anyone who browses Sourceforge probably guessed this, but only 51% of projects have actually released any files, and only 15% of projects have a status of production/stable/mature.

  • Phelps wins more medals

No doubt Michael Phelps is a great swimmer, but I can't help feeling that his medal tally is more to do with the number of "different" swimming events. We have the various combinations of 100m/200m/400m and freestyle/medley/backstroke/breaststroke/butterfly, and then some are relay. Why not go the whole hog and have 101m, 102m, 103m etc.... Then Phelps can gain about 100 medals!

  • Poor Estate Agents

Estate agents selling just one house a week, according to the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2539860/Estate-agents-selling-just-one-house-a-week.html).

Good. The sooner they all go out of business the better. Estate agents are an industry forcing us to pay money to sell our houses when it should be possible to do it a lot cheaper. When there is a housing boom, they make pot loads of money for doing very little work, so we can't feel sorry for them where there is a recession.

As soon as they all go bust, we can all start advertising our houses on free internet sites. How come we can't add our houses to RightMove now?

  • "Fakeproof" e-passport is cloned in minutes

The so-called fakeproof new passports with the microchip can be cloned, it should come as no surprise to hear.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4467106.ece

The other question regarding new passports is, how do you prove who you are in the first place when you get one? Your old passport? In that case, just clone an old passport anyway!

  • Friends Reunited is Still Rubbish!

I thought I'd give it another go since it's now free, but they still manage to make the experience as difficult as possible.

Most of the links (especially photos) use AJAX, meaning that when you click on a thumbnail, it loads the picture inside the same page. So you can't then click on your browsers Back button to go back to the thumbnails! You have to find the "Photos" link again and click on that to go back to the first page of thumbnails.

It also means that "open in new tab" doesn't work, so tabbed browsing (one of the great new features of modern browsers) is rendered completely useless. Just like Friends Reunited.

  • Scrabulous relaunches as Wordscraper

Hasbro has missed the biggest trick in the book, by forcing Scrabulous to close down, instead of employing the developers or buying the app. All they've done is caused them to tweak it slightly. Whereas Hasbro could own one of the most popular online games, it now has nothing.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can keep on playing!

  • British Gas raises prices by 35% - Who cares?

Frankly, if you are still a British Gas customer, you don't deserve any better. They frequently have the highest prices and poorest customer service, and changing supplier is so easy these days (see http://www.uswitch.com) that you have no excuse.

Still, even those of us not with British Gas are not immune to the high prices, and that's why it is important that *everyone* goes with their cheapest supplier.

A frequent argument against this is "but it will only save me a few pounds every year so it's not worth it". True, it will initially only save you a few pounds, but that's just initially. If everyone moves to the cheapest supplier, then the other suppliers will be forced to lower their prices to get any customers back. And so the process starts again.

It's called "competition", and until customers start realising that in order to foister copmpetition you need to move to the cheapest supplier, you can't complain about high energy bills.

  • Starbucks' tricks of the trade

Does a Starbucks employee ask you what your order is while you are in the queue, before you get to the actual order counter? This isn't so they'll have your coffee ready any sooner; it is actually to try and prevent you leaving before you get to the head of the queue. Once you've told them what you want, they hope you'll feel morally obliged to stay in the queue.
